"You have met our patron, Larest ir'Turian—" "—ir' Zathyran," Larest corrects him, reddening slightly. "We'll save job talk and rules, such as they are, for when we're out of this town," Captain Brack says. Adamant notices that the dwarf woman's eyes linger on his body. He can't help but feel like he's being sized up for parts. When she notices him looking back, she winks at him. Brack looks at Shorak, who is still in his human form. My bad. I was pretty sure it was wrong as I was typing it, but I didn't have time to look it up.

So technically each cabin can accommodate four people. However, cots can be dragged out into the galley as well, if privacy demands it.
Left: Thul, Melethos
Middle: Kal, Tangat
Right: Histra, Belarin?
Shorak and Streko can choose where to go. Sem and Larest seem fine with waiting to see where they go. Adamant, of course, doesn't need to sleep or even to sit. He can stand and take his 4 hours of relative inactivity anywhere he wants.
That said, a long rest can commence at anytime. But really, Jeff, if we choose not to decide, we still have made a choice....haven't we?

Yes. Not choosing means standing there not receiving the benefits of a short or long rest.

Jeff, can Belarin choose to take a short rest and stay up for a bit, before taking a long rest?

Sure. Got a solo adventure in mind? It does mean everyone else will need to wait, though, if they're commencing with a long rest.

Adamant will stand in the SE corner of the room, near the table, next to the place on the wall marked with a big 'S'... I'm ready for the long rest unless something happens... 4 hours of standing still followed by 4 hours of watching... he won't leave this room (or even move much) unless something happens... Only 4 hit points needed restoring, in any case. Adamant can still be on watch during his 4 hours of inactivity. He's alert the whole time, remember. The 'S' indicates secret door, though it is still a physical wall.

I was considering whether it'd be handy for Belarin to take a short rest and regain his spell slots (go, warlock!) just in case there was any trouble overnight. But I don't want to hold things up, so let's proceed with the long rest.

No harm is just taking a 1-hour short rest (one hour is all that's needed at this time) and then if nothing happens, proceed to the long rest. I'm fine with that.

The 'S' indicates secret door, though it is still a physical wall. That was supposed to be a joke... though I guess without the funny part...

"Melethos, no!" Belarin calls out as the tiefling starts to climb up. "She didn't mean right now...!" He shrugs and looks at Adamant. "He really doesn't like being confined, does he?" Honestly, I thought I read "Now that we're out of sight..." Not, "When we're out of sight..." My bad for not reading carefully enough. I'm seriously not trying to be difficult.

It's been said before, but maybe a visual will help. It may be worth considering scale in the present discussion. The distance between Stormreach and, say, the endpoint of the river system the Dragonfly will take you, is like the distance between the Demon Wastes and central Breland.

Great song. I think it suffered because Freddie wasn't vocals on it.
Axl's version, however, was incredible.

I will forgive you for leaving out "Who Wants to Live Forever" and Flash Gordon. And now, anymore about this and we should take it to the off-topic thread.

Grunting, Melethos leaves his study of the land and joins the others next to the ballista. He is not familiar with ranged weapons, and eyes the oversized crossbow skeptically. "I suppose you learn something new every day," he mutters, and awaits Brack's instructions. But actually, as a fighter, Melethos has been trained with many weapons. He just hasn't favored or practiced with ranged weapons very much since starting out on his journey. So he's fully proficient in heavy crossbows, as you'll see in my next post. The "not familiar" remark above is thus really just going to refer to his not-so-great Dexterity modifier.

Thul aims for the eye with both shots... Luck. _____ Heavy Crossbow d20+6 = 19; Damage d10+1 = 6
Balista d20+6 = 26 (natural 20); Damage 2d10+1 = 19
I think we have a winner!
