Tearing slightly from the putrid smell of death, Grafth yells out into the twilight, "Show yourself now or be destroyed!"
He resheathes his axe while turning a quick 360, making sure he is not being flanked. As he stops, facing north once again, he draws his shortspear and makes ready for attack.
"There are more ahead!" he yells to the people behind him.
_______________________________
Initiative = 9 If the figure comes within a 18ft range of Grafth he will throw attack with his shortspear (let me know if I need to roll this now) and fall back to the rear of the party, giving the overturned wagon a wide berth.

Oss growls and says, "Damned Karnaathi!"* He murmurs strange words and weaving his hands in intricate patterns. He aims at the only visible undead and unleashes a ray. _____________________________ *I know that not all undead are of Karnaathi origin, just playing the character
The map does not seem to indicate that Oss is behind Kal as I had requested. Regardless, Oss will move to within 30 feet and use disrupt undead on the visible undead (if the currently visible one is dead before his turn in initiative, he will blast the nearest one).

Initiative Order 14 = Goran 14 = soldiers 11 = Oss 9 = Grafth 8 = Cutter 6 = Pellorien 3 = Kal 3 = Fenwolt 2 = undead
ROUND 1:__________________________________ Everyone explodes into action! Goran sprints alongside the brush (too slow to move through it) and makes it to Kal’s side, leading with his sword. Beyond the wagon, he sees Grafth. Goran strikes at the dead man—who lurches fearlessly forward toward Kal—and sinks his blade through its heart. Blood and gore burst all too easily out the other side of its body. The creature stumbles, but keeps moving. From the look of this creature, it was once an Aundairian peasant. With their intent to surprise you foiled by your group’s keen awareness, the would-be ambushers begin to emerge from their hiding places. Even in the twilight, you can see they wear chainmail armor and wield crossbows, with longswords at their belts. These men look like true soldiers, uniformed in tabards of green and gold and wear distinctive helmets with a sort of half-faceplate. Goran recognizes these uniforms! They wear the same helmets as the men he’s been trying to chase down and find out more about! When they step into view, the soldiers aim their crossbows, take aim, and release: The lead soldier (1), the closest man to Grafth, is a blond, bearded man with lust for battle in his eyes. He immediately aims for the shifter with a grin on his face. His bolt clears Grafth by inches, then slams harmlessly into the wagon behind him. “Damn it!” The soldier to his left (2) takes a shot at Grafth as well. The aim is truer, but it still only grazes him painfully along one arm. His leather armor takes the brunt of the tear, but the steel-tipped arrowhead rips through his sleeve and draws some blood. A third soldier (3) peeks around the builder to Grafth’s right and looses his bolt, but the nimble shifter dodges in time to avoid it. A fourth soldier (4) steps from around the same boulder but aims his bolt beyond Grafth. It shoots past the wagon to where Goran stands, and smacks into Fenwolt. He cries out and stumbles back, the bolt piercing clear through his leg. Finally, a fifth soldier (5)—the one already spotted by Cutter—steps sideways to get a clear shot and looses his bolt. The missile nicks Cutter in the side, inflicting a painful wound. Oss points his hand at the dead man and releases a thin but bright ray of light. The creature shies away from his gesture, almost managing to dodge it entirely, but the ray strikes it in the shoulder and seems to disintegrate the flesh and bones there. Its rotting face opens its mouth in a paradoy of a scream, but no sounds issue. What remains of its arm hands from a thread from its exposed collar bones. Still the creature lurches forward… Grafth launches his shortspear at the lead soldier (1). The aim is good and the thrust a strong one, and the point of his spear pierces through the chainmail and bounces back out. The soldier shouts from the pain, and Grafth is satisfied to see a nasty breadk in the man's armor and the blood-welling wound. “You’re dead, weretouched!” the man promises, then begins to draw out his sword. With his twin, long knives leading the way, Cutter bolts for the soldier who hurt him. The man is wary, attempting to bring up his crossbow as a crude shield, but Cutter knows his weapons well. The curving blade slashes into the man's shoulder, shearing through chain and leather. The soldier screams as blood begins to pump out. The enemy fixes vengeful eyes on the big man and goes for his sword. Pellorien moves around the thicket, points her wand, and looses a slender blast of ice. It strikes the undead creature directly in the stomach, coating it a thin layer of ice and smashing apart several ribs. The sheer physical damage dealt to the creature is beginning to slow it, but still it moves forward. Kal steps just out of its reach and launches a magic missile. The energy dart slams into its bony face and blows it apart completely! The creature’s body sways for a moment…then drops, utterly still, upon the earth. Tangat jumps around near Kal, barking for him to get away. The creature is down, but Cutter just then glimpses another walking dead man, lurching out from the night close to him.Although he was hit by a bolt, Fenwolt seems tougher than he looks. He limps forward, muttering an artificer’s infusion. When he reaches Goran, he lifts up his hand. “Hold that still, sir.” He reaches out and touches the hilt of Goran’s longsword. The blade suddenly blazes with fire. “Now protect me!” he says. ____________________________________________ - Goran’s attack: 16 + 3 = 19 / damage is 4 + 2 + 2 (favored enemy) = 8
- Soldier’s attacks: 7 (miss), 18 (1 damage to Grafth), 9 (miss), 16 (7 damage to Fenwolt), 20 (4 damage to Cutter).
- Grafth’s attack: 18 + 3 = 21 / damage is 3 + 2 +5 (skirmish) = 10
- Cutter’s attack: 20 + 5 = 25 (not a critical hit, sadly) / damage is 4 + 3 = 7
- Pellorien’s attack: 13 +2 = 15 / damage is 2 (cold)
- Kal’s attack: damage is 5
Goran's longsword will now deal an extra 1d6 points of fire damage for a limited time!

Grafth curses at the wound, but it is merely a distraction, as he begins to seethe from the soldier's comment. As he falls back, he grasps his handaxe and quickly yells to his compatriots, "At least four ahead- soldiers... crossbows. One wounded."
And with that, he crouches low and bursts silently toward the dark brush to the west.
____________________________ Grafth is moving low around the bushes to the northwest, in an attempt to come up behind the soldiers (2) and (1). This round should put him at the northwest corner of the brush (double move for this round with no standard action). He is keeping himself concentrated on soldiers (1) and (2).
Move silently = 7 (UGH! Hopefully the darkness will help.)

Oss surveys the situation quickly and nods to himself before saying* to his nearby companions, "I will handle the undead. Deal with the soldiers and I'll meet you in the middle."
He turns and runs toward the tree and bushes to his right, following Cutter's path. ____________________________________ Oss is going to double-move, giving up his standard action to move to between the tree and bushes, leaving 30 feet between himself and the new undead to blast next round.
*Oss is not shouting his plan, but speaking up a little. He is trying to make himself heard but not by the enemy.

Goran stares at his sword for a half a second, then looks up at the enemies around him with an equal fire in his eyes. Anyone from the group standing nearby would think they'd never seen him before, so great is the change in his face. The fire glints off bitter tears rolling down his cheeks.
With a cry that echoes a lifetime of the blackest hate and indefatigable rage, he flings himself at the nearest enemy, seeking the undead first and foremost, swinging his burning sword like a vengeful god.
"I have not forgotten thee!" he screams again, loud and horrible enough to tear the night in half...
Goran seeks of course to destroy the undead, but any soldier who stands in his way, well...
Whoever's closest.

Kalarian grins as the head of the zombie explodes in front of him after his Magic Missle strikes it. It almost appears as if he is enjoying himself. Running towards the left side of the overturned cart, Kalarian lets out a yell as he charges towards the soldiers. He pushes up the sleeve of his right forarm, his dragonmark once again glowing with a soft blue light.
________________ Kalarian is activating his dragonmark and moving up to soldier #2. If he can attack with ihs longsword this turn, he will, but I'm guessing he either has to move too far or activating the dragonmark counts as an action.

Initiative Order 14 = Goran 14 = soldiers 11 = Oss 9 = Grafth 8 = Cutter 6 = Pellorien 3 = Kal 3 = Fenwolt 2 = undead
ROUND 2:__________________________________ The nearest enemy to Goran are living soldiers. He moves beyond the wagon and approaches the man between the bushes and a large boulder. Flaming blade leading the way, Goran attacks. The blade cuts through metal, leather, and flesh, scorching all three very badly. The man screams, fumbling for his own sword. The lead soldier (1), the man wounded by Grafth¡'s spear, barks out an order to the rest. The words he uses are not in the Common tongue, nor any of the languages familiar to your party. Pellorien, however, can tell that the words stem from a language even they don't speak; they merely know a few words so that they can use them as battle commands to keep their enemies from understanding. He steps forward, loading his crossbow, and takes aim to hit whoever comes around the wagon, grimacing from the deep spear wound dealt to him by Grafth. Behind him, the soldier (2) reloads his crossbow and aims for Grafth. The shifter narrowly misses the bolt, which then cuts through Pellorien¡'s cloak but leaves her unharmed. The soldier (3) wounded by Goran draws his blade and counterattacks, managing to cut through Goran¡'s armor at the hip. The blade bites through and cuts deep. Despite his rage, the half-elf gasps from the pain. The next crossbowman (4) reloads his weapon and looses the bolt. With a clear line of site, this one catches Fenwolt in the shoulder, dropping the gnome to the ground with a cry of pain. The soldier laughs. The last visible soldier (5) curses at Cutter and swings his sword at the big man. Hindered by his pain, his swing is wild and Cutter easily steps aside. Oss hustles off the road and through the grass toward Cutter's position. He stops short, readying a spell, when he sees clearly now the rotting form of another of his countrymen. The site fills him with loathing and anger. The zombie seems to see only Cutter at the moment, reaching out with filthy claws to take down the living. Grafth moves the opposite direction, attempting to circumvent the bushes as quietly as possible. He needn¡'t have bothered¡ªin the din of battle, the enemy soldiers don¡'t seem to notice. Now in close quarters with the enemy, Cutter¡'s best option is to finish what he started. Another slash of his exotic blade, this time slicing into the soldier¡'s wrist and arm, has him fall to the ground. His descent into unconscious is obviously ushered with pain. Pellorien tosses a trace of sand into the air and gestures at the soldiers on the other side of the wagon. One of them (2) goes from reloading his weapon to face-planting in the mud¡ªsound asleep in a heartbeat. The other (1) shakes his head and growls his frustration, ultimately unaffected. Her spell doesn't seem to touch the third soldier at all. Kal taps his arm and both the ring on his finger and his dragonmark flares to life¡ªbrilliant blue and warmth radiate visibly from his skin, while his ring shines a fiery orange. Kal advances around the wagon, drawing his sword. Immediately the first soldier (1) looses his bolt at him. The missile strikes Kal in the chest, causing him to flinch¡but the bolt snaps apart as it does so, leaving no trace of injury. The soldier¡'s expression screws up incredulously, then rage. "Deneith!?" he shouts. "You will die!" Tangat bounds around the wagon on the other side, barking madly as if to distract the enemy, but he stays out of sword reach. The zombie limps over to Cutter and strikes out with an tormented grunt. Claws with the strength of the grave pierce through his armor, scraping several layers of skin away with filthy claws, and drawing out blood. ____________________________________________ - Goran's attack: 15 + 3 = 18 / damage is 1 + 3 + 6 (fire) = 10
Soldier's attacks: 13 (miss), 21 (5 damage to Goran), 21 (8 damage to Fenwolt), 10 (miss)
- Lead soldier's attack: 16 (7 damage negated by dragonmark)
- Soldiers' Will saves against Pellorien's spell: 3 and 14
- Cutter's attack: 9 + 5 = 14 / damage 4 +3 = 7
- Zombie's attack: 14 (3 damage to Cutter)

With rage tempered somewhat by the excrutiating pain, Goran again lifts his sword...and calls to mind a bitter memory that seems to renew his bloody rage. He yells loud enough for Pellorian to hear,
"Help the gnome, Pellorien!"
His target is the soldier whom he has already hit, this time he means to kill, and crush, and rend, and utterly destroy. He seems oblivious to danger. He bellows again with insatiable rage...his sword tracing a lethal path through the air.
If possible, however, Goran will put himself in front of Fenwolt during or after, remembering somewhat of the gnome's request for protection.
Jeff, assuming Goran is still able to do so, he attacks the guy in front of him again with his sword. With everything he's got...since he has clearly made an association between these soldiers and the undead they have harnessed to their foul motive.

Kalarian laughs as the bolt shatters against him. Now he definitely is enjoying himself. He looks quickly from the soldier who threatened him and then to Goran, realizing that the half-elf may need help. Deciding that the removal of their leader may demoralize the group, Kalarian turns his attention back to the head soldier and rushes at him. As he does so, he barks a command in the Halfling tounge towards Tangat, pointing at the soldier who has been firing upon Fenwolt. As Kalarian draws closer to the soldier, he motions with his hand and speaks arcane words. Once again, a streak of light races from his hand towards the soldier

Grafth continues his low sprint, heading straight for the now-sleeping soldier. He slides to a stop, taking just enough time to pry the soldier's helmet up and bury his axe in the back of the man's neck. As he pries his weapon loose, his eyes are alert while hiding any trace of emotion.

Weakened b the wound, Cutter eyes the zombie warily. If he thinks he can get a good slash to teh neck, aiming for decapitation (or as close to it as he can get) he will try. If the zombie is moving fast and alert, he will back up to the sound of the others.

Initiative Order 14 = Goran 14 = soldiers 11 = Oss 9 = Grafth 8 = Cutter 6 = Pellorien 3 = Kal 2 = undead
ROUND 3:__________________________________________ Goran renews his wrath, making the soldier in front of him the sole object of his fury. His rage has made him reckless, however. He gets only a glancing blow off the soldier's armor. However, the wounded soldier begins to run. His tactless movement gives Goran a second swing at him. The stroke shears through the man's back, burning a line of black flesh through the chain armor. The soldier drops hard...very likely dead. The leader calls out another command. The furthest soldier (4) reloads his crossbows, takes a step for better aim, and looses the bolt at Fenwolt, who lays still...even as Pellorien works her way toward him. The bolt hits the gnome in the back, jolting his body with the impact. The lead soldier advanced on Kal with his blade. "Go now to the punishment your 'gods' have prepared for you," he hisses, then swings. Kal raises his own weapon to parry, but it succeeds only in slowing the soldier's sword. The tip of the blade cuts into Kal's shoulder. Oss blasts the zombie before him with another white ray, like the first. It burns a wide hole clear through its abdomen, dissolving the heart and a large piece of its rotting lungs. Grafth reaches the sleeping soldier, driving his axe down easily into man's upper back. He is moving too swiftly to deliver a perfect coup de grace, however. The wound penetrates the armor, eliciting a moan of pain even in his sleep, but it isn't deep enough to yet be fatal. Cutter gauges the zombie to be too tough for a single, sure strike. But its movements are also slow by comparison. Cutter moves quickly away, concentrating only on getting away, easily evading its attempts to strike him at the same time. He falls back closer to where Oss stands. Pellorien arrives where Fenwolt lays. She is too pressed to be sure, but she thinks he might well be dead. Only she can see this at the moment. She looses an arrow at the crossbowman (4) who hit the gnome. Her own arrow goes wide, snapping apart when it hits the boulder on that side of the road. Kal engages the lead soldier, wielding his Deneith longsword. After a few weaving swings, he catches the soldier under the arm, pushing the blade through his abdomen. The leader fixes Kal with a disbelieving stares as his teeth slick red with blood. He goes to speak, to call out for help, and loses consciousness...sliding off Kal's blade to the ground. Tangat, not quite as fearsome as a real wolf but nevertheless strong and aggressive, attacks the crossbowman (4). He jumps, snapping, and manages to briefly close his teeth on a soft spot near the man's groin. The soldier screams in pain and rage. The zombie shambles after Cutter, but it's too slow to do any more at the moment. ____________________________________________
- Goran’s attack: 3 +3 = 6 (miss), attack of opportunity: 13 + 3 = 16 / damage is 7 + 2 + 4 (fire) = 13

Goran swivels his gaze to Grafth, his eyes still alight with fury, though dimmed a little from blood loss and pain, and weariness.
"Don't kill them all, leave one alive, at least...alive enough to speak, damn you!"
He staggers over towards Fenwolt's body. "Is he alive?" he mutters as a wave of guilt begins to wash over him. The gnome had asked him for protection, and he failed to do so.
Goran has tried to staunch his wound with his hand for the moment, and prepares a healing spell for Fenwolt, but if the gnome is dead then he will use it on himself.

The soldier's scream draws Grafth's attention, and a solitary glint of amusement flits across his face. He pulls his axe from the rip in the man's back and heads straight for the distracted enemy. His axe, now trimmed with blood, is held wide as he swoops in for the attack.

14 = Goran 14 = soldiers 11 = Oss 9 = Grafth 8 = Cutter 6 = Pellorien 3 = Kal / Tangat 2 = prone soldier
ROUND 4 ____________________________________________
Goran runs over to where Fenwolt lays. The fire that burns soundlessly on his blade flickers, casting more light over the gnome's body. Hey lays on his stomach, eyes closed, body penetrated by three crossbow bolts. Goran sees no rise and fall indicative of breath. Solemn, he casts a spell of minor healing upon himself.
Beginning to look desperate, the remaining standing soldier (4) cries out another word in the unknown language. It sounds loud enough to be heard for some distance. There is a feverish mania in his eyes and he turns them on Tangat. Dropping his crossow, he draws his longsword and slashes down at the dog. Tangat dances nimbly out of the way, barking.
Oss aims at the zombie in front of him, casting his spell defensively. He is nearly too distracted by the creature's proximity to pull it off, but pull it off he does! The white ray shines as easily as a light through the undead creature's hip, severing one leg. It drops to the ground and lays still, in true death. Oss returns, then, to the road.
Grafth moves in a roundabout path to come in behind the soldier. With Tangat on the opposite side, the soldier is too distracted to notice him. But his aim isn't good enough, and the thick chain armor turns away his axe blade without effect. The soldier throws his head over his shoulder to look upon Grafth.
Cutter follows Oss back to the road, standing on one side of the wagon so that if he'd like to still engage an enemy, he can get there in the next few moments.
Pellorien examines Fenwolt's body, quickly determing he's dead. His only possessions are the clothes he wears, the harness of tools, the wand, his identification papers, and a skinny gold-colored ring on one finger. There are no potions.
Kal advances on the soldier and attempts to grapple him...which involves moving in within reach of the soldier's blade. Kal is rewarded with a quick flash of the man's blade, which cuts through the armor of Kal's arm, drawing a long line of blood. The pain is intense, foiling his attempt to tackle the man. "Come to Dolurrh* with me!" the man jeers with a maniacal grin.
Just then, Grafth feels a burning line along his ribcage: a crossbow bolt skimming his body. He looks to the side, to the see the man (2) he'd just hacked in the back pointing an empty crossbow at him. Awakened by the painful attack upon him, the soldier looks at Grafth with fury. He'd scrambled to load and shoot his crossbow, not having even taken the time to stand again.
Grafth hears behind him, somewhere in the increasing darkness to the north, the clomping sound of a running horse growing more distant. ____________________________________________
Soldier's attack: 6 (miss), 16 (attack of opportunity) (5 damage to Kal), 16 (3 damage to Grafth) Goran heals himself 1 point. Oss's Concentration check to cast defensively: 15 (success—just barely!) Grafth's Listen check = 13
The party's condition: Though none are on the verge of death, the day's events (especially the crash) still leave you battered. Cutter is near to falling over, Kal is in a good deal of pain and near to collapse, Pellorien is in good condition, Grafth is really starting to hurt (making the shifter more than a little irritable) and is near to passing out from weariness, Goran isn't doing so well, and Tangat is still just shaken up from the crash. (Be sure to always check the hit points and nonlethal hit point totals in my signature below. Remember that if your nonlethal damage exceeds your current hit point total, you fall unconscious.)
* Dolurrh is the realm of the dead, a plane commonly believed to be where the souls of mortal beings go when they die. Most believe it to be a gray, memory-draining void, but very few have returned from it to give a true account.[/color

Grafth snarls in anger and frustration as he looks back at the man he just came from.
"How is he awake?!" The look on his face belies a dispirited ignorance of magic and its laws.
"As for you..." he says, turning his attention back to the man grappling with Kalarian. He crouches down, pulls his axe low and attempts a swipe at the back of his legs, rolling toward the boulder adjacent to him, in case the fallen soldier manages to nock another arrow.
_____________________________ Grafth attacks = 3 (dammit! WTF.) Grafth seeks a temporary defensive position behind the boulder.

Oss moves past the wagon and falls to a crouched position, taking aim at the prone crossbowman before loosing a small ball of fire at the attacker. _______________________________________ Oss is moving his full 30ft and then using Lesser Orb of Fire on the prone crossbowman (solder #2).
Ranged Touch Atk: 14 (I forgot to add in the +4 for him being prone) Damage: 10

Goran stands again, and pulls his sword from the ground, ready to fight again.
"It is my opinion that we should get the hells out of here, now. We should stay away from the road."
He turns to Pellorien, "I think we should bring Fenwolt's body. I don't want to leave it to be torn apart by wolves or worse...become one of those..." he says, pointing at the corpse of one of the undead.
Meanwhile, if combat has been resolved, he goes to the body of the soldier he slew and begins to inspect it carefully.
"I know this crest..." he mutters.
Jeff, a Search check please for Goran, on the body of the fallen soldier. Presumably the other soldiers are dead or will be soon?

Initiative Order 14 = Goran 14 = soldiers 11 = Oss 9 = Grafth 8 = Cutter 6 = Pellorien 3 = Kal / Tangat 2 = prone soldier
ROUND 5____________________________________________ Goran, under the assumption his companions have the remaining soldiers well in hand, kneels to the one he felled and searches his body. Aside from his armor and weapons, the only other object on his person is a sunrod—an iron torch with a gold-colored alchemical tip that can be used to produce flame quickly and burn for hours once triggered. The soldier (4) seems delighted by Kal's angry response, goaded into further bloodshed. He lashes out at Kal with his blade twice, but the Deneith heir parries it away. Oss throws his orb of fire straight into the prone soldier, which explodes in a small localized fireball. The man screams for a moment, then loses consciousnes amidst the flames. His entire body is blackened by the fire, which lingers in several places on what remains of his tabard. The crossbow in his hands drops useless to the ground. Grafth's attack is clumsy, and the soldier sidesteps it. Grafth sidles closer to the boulder but doesn't duck around for fear of opening his defense in the doing. His new spot places him directly opposite Kal, who sees that the soldier's attention is divided. Cutter, still a bit too unsteady to engage an enemy, hangs back, ready with his knives to defend should anyone venture close. Pellorien lingers near, examining Fenwolt's possessions and taking the gnome's wand in hand. Keeping on the defensive, Kal takes a few swings at the soldier. Too weary to hit too hard, Kal finds his moment when the soldier turns slightly to regard Grafth directly behind him. Kal's blade cuts a thick line across the man's chest. The soldier grits his teeth against the pain—but it's too much, and he collapses to the ground. All the enemies lay fallen. Some have clearly bled to death, while others may yet live. The stench of the undead is strong, though the corpses lay still. ____________________________________________ Kal's attack: 13+3 -2 (defensively) + 2 (flanking) = 16 / damage 6 + 1 = 7
The combat, and turn-based mode, is over!
