The vulture squawks again, and jerks its head in the direction of the Emissary. In his thoughts, Belarin tries to tell the spider, "He's the tastiest undead of all!"

Shorak takes the opportunity of the wraith's attention on Adamant to push past the new Vulture/Belarin, away from the melee and north towards Streko. He turns back to hurl his weapon at the undead creature now harassing the warforged.
Shorak uses Cunning Action to disengage and moves 20' north.
Ranged attack 1d20+8=25. Slashing damage 1d6+5=9. Sneak attack damage 4d6=16

Streko calls out to Olladra yet again, this time, targeting his friends, rather than his foe.
"Olladra, bless and protect my brothers from this foul demon!" __________________________________________________
Streko casts Mass Healing Word. The following gain 7 hot points: Belarin, Shorak, Tangat and Kal. I don't believe Adamant can use this, as he is a construct, but if he can, then him too.

Condign struggles in the grip of the spider. He watches as Shorak's boomerang bites into the Emissary. Bits of the undead fiend fly into the air.
"Hurry," he tells the spider. "Free me. Take robed one. Before it is destroyed."

Remember, Shorak's got Cunning Action. You can also dash, disenge, or hide on every turn. Any interest?
● Streko casts Mass Healing Word. (Joe, since you can cast on up to six people within 60 feet of you, there's no reason you can't include yourself, or Condign. Adamant can benefit, although he heals only half as a warforged. Also, Belarin in his vulture form won't benefit, since he's already at his max hit points a vulture; when he reverts back to Belarin, then he'll be where he left off (dying). ● Streko, Shorak, Kal, Tangat, and Condign each heal 7 hit points. Adamant heals 3 hit points.
9 = Adamant 8 = hooded one 4 = Kal & Tangat

"Yes, Emissary, if this is my last fight it is in a just cause. What more could an honorable being desire?" As he moves with his opponent, he starts to chant. As he moves with the rhythm of the chanting, light starts to flow from his octogram down his arm like a liquid. It covers his warhammer and the weapon burns with holy light. "Make of me Thy rock. Let Thine enemies break upon me. I count not their number, Nor measure their strength, For I am Thy rock. I will not be moved."
Well, the Emissary packs a wallop. ... I'm going to pull out all the stops...
Warforged Resilience: Adamant regains CON hp (+2) Swift Action: Cast 2nd level spell Branding Smite For a minute, my next melee attack that hits does +2d6 extra radiant damage. It also does a bunch more stuff if the target is invisible. Does not apply. If it's allowed, he'll also add Divine Smite On a hit I'll spend a 2nd level spell slot to add +3d8 extra radiant damage.
So two melee attacks against the Emissary... Warhammer +1
dlw32:1D20+7 → 15(8 + 7)#first attack -- Probably a miss but just in case, here's some damage: dlw32:1D8+4 → 5(1 + 4)#first damage
dlw32:1D20+7 → 22(15 + 7)#second attack -- that's better... dlw32:1D8+4 → 7(3 + 4)#second damage
And if there's a hit in there: dlw32:2D6 → 7(4 +3)#radiant Branding Smite damage dlw32:3D8 → 11(6 +2 +3)#radiant Divine Smite damage
Reminders: * From Fighting Style Protection: cause disadvantage on attacks against my friends who are adjacent. * From Aura of Protection: Friendlies w/i 10 feet add my CHA (+3) to saves. * From Sentinel: I do Op Attacks even if the creature disengages; If I hit with an Op Attack, the target's speed drops to 0; if a target w/i 5' makes an attack against anyone but me, I can counter-attack.

"Do not destroy him, fool," Histra calls out with her hoarse voice. "Shadowfell spiders feed on undeath, not oblivion."
The knight-wraith doesn't shy from Adamant's attacks. Both heavy strokes of the new hammer, which now blazes with holy light, are parried by the "emissary"'s greatsword, proving his swordsmanship is at least as skilled as his powers of undeath.
"Even rocks can be brittle," the knightly figure responds to Adamant's prayer.
Histra gesturs upward while uttering an arcane phrase. For a moment the knight-wraith's body appears to rise up off the ground, but then it drops again, pulling loose of her magic.
Looking between Adamant and Streko, Histra says, "Hold him, do not slay him, or we will face the spider."
● Adamant regains 2 hit points. ● Adamant's first attack misses. ● Adamant's second attack... → Knight-wraith uses his reaction to parry, adding 4 to his AC. Adamant's second attack is thus blocked. Divine Smite (and the spell slot used) isn't expended yet, you don't use it until you hit (that's when you decide whether to use it). ● Histra casts a spell. ● The knight-wraith's Constitution saving throws (with advantage): 20 and 8 (success)
Branding Smite: Dave, I've amended the spell description on Adamant's sheet. There are some minor changes, like the duration is Concentration now, up to 1 minute, and they use the final wording by calling it a bonus action instead of a swift action. Same thing, though.
4 = Kal & Tangat

"Belarin, if you can understand me, move back!" Kal cries out. He watches the wraith closely, waiting for his moment. "Everyone, keep it between us and the pit," he says with a nod of acknowledgment to Histra. Kal quickly glances over his shoulder at the distant wall of fire. There is sweat on his brow. "We're going to have more for the spiders to eat soon, anyway...."
_____________________ Kal will ready the following actions:
If Belarin moves north at least one square, Kal will move to the square just NW of Adamant. He will then cast Thunderwave at the wraith, which he should be able to do from that spot without hitting Adamant.

The mother spider shifts her chelicerae around, and for a moment Condign drops. She catches him at the leg between her jaws, and he hangs upside down over the open pit—still clutching his sword and shield and holding onto as much dignity as the position allows, while his tail also swishes and hangs downward. Venom drips visibly from her fangs.
She emits her disturbing, nonhuman voice, and telepathically each of you hears: “Deliver, or the red man dies.”
Three of the giants spiders skitter up the wall just north of the pit, flanking both sides, but do not advance much further. They quiver like some artificer's spring-loaded device.
Okay, since Kal is readying an action as his action, he can use his reaction after Belarin goes.
The spiders likewise appear to be readying an action.
Round 8:
23 = Belarin 21 = ghouls 19 = knight-wraith 14 = Shorak & Condign (either order is fine) 12 = Streko 9 = Adamant 8 = hooded one 4 = Kal & Tangat 3 = spiders

The concussive force of Kal's spell slams into the knight-wraith, who rises up and holds his footing against its power. The spiders squeal at the thunderous crack, and tiny rocks come tumbling down the wall.
Then the knight-wraith issues a strange sound, and his greatsword clatters to the stony ground. His body sways a moment then simply falls to the ground without another sound.
The spiders on the wall make whispery sounds but do not move.
"Pray you have not destroyed it," Histra says, pointing at the fallen figure. "And bring it to her."
● Knight-wraith's Constitution saving throw with advantage: 5 & 21 (success) / 8 thunder damage to the knight-wraith ● The knight-wraith drops to the ground...dead?
14 = Shorak & Condign (either order is fine) 12 = Streko 9 = Adamant 8 = hooded one 4 = Kal & Tangat 3 = spiders

Blood rushes to Condign's head as he hangs upside down, and his vision dims. He cannot hear the battle for the pounding in his ears.
The fight continues. Then the emissary falls, and Condign's hopes for seeing Stormreach again fade. He had expected more undead, more bodies to feed the spiders living in the chasm. Now, without the emissary to offer the mother, there will not be enough food to satisfy her. Not since his possession by the spirit Rath has he felt so hopeless.
In a final effort to live, he uses his power to shout to his friends. "Are there more undead? You need more food."

Shorak rushes forward and kicks the knight-wraith's sword away. Bending down to grab hold of the undead creature he looks at Adamant. "Help me get this thing to the spider." He calls over his shoulder as he lifts/drags the creature towards the spider. "Everyone move towards the pit or up the stairs. Kal get ready to drop that fire wall. The spiders need their nourishment."

I'm going to jump in ahead of schedule... with apologies Joe... but it's not a very controversial action and it's going to be a difficult weekend... not sure I'll get a breather until Monday... once again we have a go-live on Monday that we're going to be on death-march coding all weekend. Sweet Jesus.
Adamant seems ready for a moment to provide a coup de grace when the Emissary falls but does restrain himself at Histra's statement. Moving to respond to Shorak's request, the warforged tucks his hammer in his belt and grabs the wraith's shoulder and starts to drag it towards the edge.
Though he's no longer chanting, he keeps the rhythm going in his head.
On his turn Adamant aids in dragging the wraith. He'll keep the Branding Smite spell going for now since he didn't hit. Thanks for cleaning that up for me Jeff!

Streko watches the Wraith fall and feels both elation and trepidation. "Well done, Kalarian! However, Histra is correct. We must offer the Wraith to the spider, quickly...and prepare to bring her more morsels if necessary. Once you drop the wall of flames, I might be able to assist with that. Just say the word. Of course, if the spider injures Condign, I suspect it will also injure me a great deal, so do what you must to appease her. Please."

Lying prostrate, the knight-wraith now resembles and armored torso, with only misty shadow for legs. Even so, Shorak, and then Adamant, find him to be heavier than he looks. They manage to drag him towards the spiders, but in doing so a withering chill flows into their bodies merely by touching the creature's cold form. Histra moves back to the narrow rock stairway at the side of the passage. She looks at the vulture form of Belarin inscrutably, then points up the face of the cliff possibly to somewhere the stairs lead. Then she begins to ascend. Shorak and Adamant drag the knight-wraith forward, but each takes 2 points of necrotic damage.

"Alright," Kal says, the strain clearly showing on his face. "Everyone get ready. You want more food? You got it." Kal closes his eyes and sighs, and he feels the tension leave him as the wall of fire vanishes, disappearing from it's base and fluttering through to the top of the hungry flames. Kal moves quickly across the passageway and flattens himself against the wall, hoping the ghouls will pass quickly towards the waiting spiders.
____________________ Yeah, not really worth waiting for.
Kal will move to the opposite side of the walkway (closer to where Histra is) and as close to the wall as he can get.
He'll drop the Wall of Fire and take the Dodge action.

As Kal dispels his magic and moves quickly toward the far wall, the spiders seem to shrink backward and down, making themselves less obvious.
The mother spider lunges forward, drops Condign unceremoniously in the air as she does, and with a disturbingly wet sound, sprays an almost invisible liquid which appears to turn into a gluelike solid state within seconds. With it, she ensnares the knight-wraith's body and drags him backward.
Condign hits the ground with a grunt, but manages to land with at least one foot under him. He's only a few inches from the edge of the pit.
When the fire at the north end of the canyon falls, there is no onrush of ghouls—at least, not yet. The air ripples from the heat a moment longer, and a crowd of hungry, pale faces stare warily back in your direction. A few of the ghouls take swipes at the air as if not quite believing in the dissipation of the fire. A few burnt ghouls on the ground are testament to its bite. But then two huge former half-orcs come surging out of the crowd—straight toward the rest of the party. They look up, howling at the giant vulture, and down at Tangat, Streko, Shorak, and Adamant. In moments, the horde will be upon them all! Tangat barks, snapping at Streko's legs as if aggressively trying to herd him towards Kal like a sheepdog would its charges.
Out of turn-based mode for the moment. Just tell me your next immediate action!

Kal grins, an odd gesture given the danger of the moment, and jerks his chin towards the vulture. "He's taken on his true form," he laughs at Condign. "Quick, everyone. Let's move. Follow Histra. Let the ghouls and the spiders take care of each other." Kal pauses to see if everyone is following, then, with a nod towards the mother spider, begins to make his way up the stairs.

It is quickly apparent that the ghouls have no interest in the spiders, only the living who've roused them. They howl and moan as they push over each other in cavorting pursuit of your party. Fortunately, the spiders have only interest in them. One spider after another issues from the pit and overtakes them even as the mother withdraws with her prize. Giving little heed, each of you hurries up the crude and narrow stair-path carved into the rock face, but you do see that some of the ghouls at the back of the horde turn back and flee, while the spiders do not venture too far after them. Something keeps them from simply heading directly to the ghouls' abodes. The stairs wind this way and that, reminiscent of the labyrinth, and only the Belarin-vulture, whose wings beat the air noisely in an attempt to hover slowly, can see that they split at several points to various ledges carved along the cliff face. At the head of the party is Histra, moving steadily upward. Soon she leads you all out onto the third ledge up, which commands no view on the canyon below but does look out over the city-like shape of Dolurrh's Stormreach. Shorak can immediately spy the thin swirling vortex of lights that indicates one of the portals back to Eberron that he saw earlier. He's sure it's the one that he was aiming for in the Temple section of Oldgate. Although they'll need to go back to the ground level to resume the trek, he can see now that the party is much closer now. If this were Stormreach proper, he could almost count the streets. Once every spreads out along the rocky ledge (which is about twenty-by-fifteen feet), Histra, still keeping her cowl drawn close around her, points the ground. "Stay here," she says to the party at large, then turns and starts back up the stairway, presumably to a higher point along the clifflike structure. "Belarin, follow me." 1,500 XP has been given to everyone for this recent event. Most of you are now within 1000 XP of reaching level 9! Not too soon to start thinking about that.

Condign watches in amazement as the vulture flies after Histra. "As if impersonating a lich was not enough," he mutters.
He turns to Streko and taps on the scale armor. "This is cursed. When I am wounded, for some reason, you are also wounded. While I was in the pit, I had to fight for my survival against a ghoul named the Black Wolf. He managed to get past my defenses and I was hit. Did you take any damage? Did the distance between us make any difference?"

Adamant looks over the group and notes his own wounds. He touches the octogram on his chest; the old habit still grounds him in this place. "We should assess our condition in general. Shall we heal a bit while we wait for Belarin and Histra to return? We must remember to save something for Belarin, I believe he will still be injured when he becomes himself again."
