As Adamant and Kal continue to make a show of their presence, Shorak turns around...
...and sees the hooded, staff-holding figure they saw earlier on the ledge above the fissure. It is standing still there in the street, watching them, from behind clear sight. If Condign were here, he could probably make out more detail.
Belarin, seeing this, can't help but think it does look like the woman he knows, but it's standing much too still.

Seeing the staff-holding figure behind them, Belarin says, “We have a guide, it seems, or a tormenter. Regardless, walking toward her – if it IS a ‘her’ – ended up being a bad idea before. Let’s not do so again. Keep moving forward.” He steps forward into the courtyard proper. With a wave of his hand, four small, floating lights emerge from the folds of his cloak and move silently ahead and slightly to his left. The four lights pause at a point a few feet before the doors on the far side of the courtyard, and then they spread out, forming a small string of illumination.
_______________________
Belarin moves to a spot alongside Shorak. He uses his feyweave clothing’s dancing lights feature. He sends four lights, each providing 10 feet of illumination, to the opposite side of the courtyard, 10 feet before the doors on the far side and 10 feet above the courtyard itself. They spread out to form a “horizontal” (east-west) line, with each light 20 feet from the next.

As Belarin’s fey lights appear and Adamant moves towards the eastern door, the gleaming eyes in the windows draw closer. And there are more of them. More disturbing, you can now make out a susurrus of inhuman growls. Pale claws appear at the sills as hairless bodies crowd closer to the windows. Finally, several of the doors around the courtyard creak open and a handful of ghouls issue forth from each. They are of various races. At least half of them appear to have been human before their skin became colorless and paper-thin, stretched back along emaciated bones. But the others are a mixture of races: stocky dwarves, diminutive halflings, possibly even a gnome or two. The dwarven ghouls hardly look like like their living kin. Only a wisp of a beard remains of their living pride. Right now they appear to be eyeing you warily, but one thing is quite clear in their demeanor as they begin to snarl: they are ravenous. Filthy fang-filled mouths rasp open and closed, and way-too-long tongues issue forth. Note that the Dancing Lights spell provides dim light, which is kind of already around you (except where it fades away into near black), but I’ve still indicated here where the lights have appeared.

"See, that worked... we have their attention... ummm, what was the next step in the plan?" Adamant is suddenly feeling the space between the party and himself. He starts to back up a bit.
Let's move him 1 SW, 1 W for now.
To be clear, Addy's got his shield and the new warhammer in hand. He doesn't really know anything about the weapon yet, right?

"Great," says Kal, but it almost sounds like a question. "Let's see if we can't lead them back the way we came." Suddenly, next the Adamant, the image of a scared human appears. He is not armed, and fear pours palpably out of him, even though he makes no sound. He looks in panic at the approaching ghouls, then searches frantically for a way out. He stares back at the group of companions and then begins to move in their direction. He trips and falls, and from his prone position, he flips to his back so he can see the approaching undead. He raises his hands in front of his face, as though trying to ward off the very sight of the undead. As the ghouls move closer, he scrambles to his feet, but nearly falls, an injury clearing marring his leg. He limps, slowly, in the direction of the pit where the spiders dwell.... _____________________ Ghouls are stupid. Hopefully Minor Illusion will trick them.

Streko grumbles. "Perhaps now would be a good time to recall our war-forged friend before he gets himself entangled in ghoulish fangs and teeth." He glances back at their "guardian" and then returns his gaze toward the plaza. "I know it may be hard to believe, but I am liking this place less now than I did just a few moments ago."

Several things happen in tandem. Adamant starts to take some measured steps back toward the group, even as Kal's illusionary (and utterly silent) ghoul bait appears beside him then stumbles backward fearfully away. Streko and Shorak are the first to notice the staff-wielding figure turn sharply away, as if facing something unseen back toward the spider pit. Then it, or she, swiftly steps away and out of sight in the same direction. Shorak follows slowly, leaving the open courtyard in favor of the narrower path. The ghouls closest to Adamant start forward as well, hunched and loping like animals, snarling like beasts with damaged vocal chords. One of the ghouls even lunges forward toward the illusionary man, provoked by the prospect of chase. But a few feet away it slows down, sniffing the air, cocking its head, seeming unconvinced by the odorless, silent man. A halfling-sized ghoul, closest to Adamant, leads its growing pack towards him, snarling quite unlike any halfling he's ever heard. It meets his eyes and hisses: "Run away, war-man! Take your light and go, leave flesh ones, and you run free." From his wartime experiences, Adamant is accustomed to seeing many abuses to human, even elven and dwarven bodies. But seeing a diminutive halfling in this undead state saddens him deeply. More ghouls emerge from the doors. More than a score are arrayed across the courtyard and start to move cautiously forward. They flinch under the glare of Adamant's light. They dislike it but aren't necessarily hindered by it.

"We're awfully good at attracting attention," says Belarin softly to his friends. "Time to go, I think."
He dismisses the floating lights and begins backing up. To those around him, he seems to fade into the shadows and become virtually invisible.
_____________
Belarin moves 30 feet back to a spot along the wall and then uses his One With Shadows invocation to become invisible.

"Adamant, double time!" Kal scrapes a line in the dirt between the walls near him. "We get a few of them past here, and then I'll block off the rest of them. Move!"
_______________ Kal will step back (south?) 20 feet and wait for Adamant.
If things move too fast, Jeff, Kal's plan is to let no more than 5 of the ghouls past that line (moving towards the spider pit as they get closer to him). Once they're past, he will cast Wall of Fire across the opening, hot side towards the courtyard, and run back towards the spider pit leading the ghouls.

As the party begins to withdraw from the courtyard, and Belarin begins to merge with the shadows.... Adamant follows, facing the growing horde of ghouls as each group of them lopes cautiously forth. None of them are outright sprinting yet, but they are aggressively quickening their pace. More of them begin to rasp and growl like beasts, and with halflings among them, the collective sound is becoming even more disturbing. For good measure, one of the dwarf-ghouls lunges through Kal's illusionary victim; the rest ignore it. As Adamant once again comes into Belarin's view, the warlock's magic melts away, foiled by the pure white light. Kal waits anxiously, Tangat beside him now, for Adamant and the ghouls to be positioned properly in order to lay down his spell of fire. But before they do, Shorak and Streko notice the tall dark figure standing in the gloom to the south, positioned about thirty feet away from Streko at the bottom of those winding steps. With a twinge of fear, both half-drow and halfling have the feeling it's Branash's wraith-knight "emissary." There is no sign of the robe-and-staff figure. Belarin's invocation only works when he's in dim light or darkness, but Adamant is shining 50 feet of bright light and 50 more feet of dim light. (While Adamant can choose to make it dim for Belarin, (1) he'd have to be told that and (2) remember that in dim light, most of you have disadvantage on attacks.

Belarin reluctantly steps out of the gloom as the shadows around him dissipate. "Whoever she or it is, Good Streko," he says, not taking his eyes off the ghouls, "she's not here now and she likely won't treat us as one of your mother's muffins. That's not the case for them. Keep moving."
He looks at Kalarian and then he calls out to Adamant. "Nerrin never lied to you, did he?" Hoping that Adamant takes the hint, he mutters a few syllables. Suddenly, you all hear the plaintive, hungry wail of a baby from back in the plaza, around the corner to the left. "Come on, Adamant, pick up the pace," he says in a voice only Kal can hear, and then he moves back.

_______________ The only change I will make to Kal's previous plan is that he now only wants to let two or three ghouls through. Hopefully that's enough to satisfy the hungry spiders (bastards).

Adamant keeps moving back to the group. He stays at the tail end, not passing anyone, but does encourage them to keep moving. "I don't think we should stop until we're back to Condign... if necessary there's a point where the streets narrow just beyond Streko back there. I could hold a fair number of these creatures back... for a while... but we'd need to get back at least that far."
"I wish Condign were here," he adds looking at the numbers. "No, actually if I have one wish, it would be for all of us, Condign included, to be back in our rooms in the real Stormreach... and it's a fresh new morning... and sunny."

Near the left-hand corner of the plaza, where it meets the passage the party is retreating, you hear the wailing of a baby—a jarring sound for most of you in such a horrid place. But you realize the sound followed Belarin’s incantation and that he and Kal both have been conjuring illusions. A cluster of ghouls stop and look in that direction, thinning the ranks of those who surge forward after you. None of them have sprinted outright as if they are half expecting a trap. When Kal finds the best opportunity—and there is no ideal moment—he sweeps his arm with Skyfang in hand, focusing his spell, and a wall of flames springs to life across the gap. The line of fire bisects the growing horde of ghouls. Eight ghouls remain on your side of the wall—Kal could admit no fewer—and though they turn their heads in surprise at the wall, this also drives them into the ferocity of cornered animals. At the same time, the mysterious figure steps out from the winding stairwell to the south, directly in your path. It is alone, but it is the unmistakable tall, shadow-cloaked figure with its combination of robes and knightly armor. The two-handed greatsword you’d only seen strapped to its back is now held in its hands. White eyes that do not glow punctuate the darkness of its form. “For those of you who surrender,” it says in a masculine, passionless voice, “I will administer a swift and merciful death. Those who do not will serve Branash as a slave. My lord has another fate in mind for Belarin Malizia.” You have no idea whether the ghouls and the knight-wraith would fight against a common foe, but either way, their snarls turn into horrible, rapacious cries of hunger. They lope forward. Adamant stands closest to them, intent on being a shield of Dol Arrah. Here we go. Like it or not, fighting now commences!
Round 1
23 = Belarin 21 = ghouls 19 = Emissary 14 = Shorak 12 = Streko 9 = Adamant 4 = Kal & Tangat
Technically the Wall of Fire is opaque (and twenty feet high) and so you can no longer see what’s on the other side—I’ve left some of the map revealed north of the wall, though, to give you an idea for the gathering numbers before you saw before it went up. Remember, Darren, that Kal must maintain concentration to keep the wall going for up to 1 minute (through round 10), so he can't cast other concentration spells and any damage he takes stands a chance to disrupt it (a Constitution saving throw is made).

Belarin’s head droops. His hands at his sides, he takes several steps toward the Emissary and says weakly, “I yield. I implore you, though, to let my friends pass safely. I am ready to die…” His arms suddenly shoot forward, his hands thrusting a ball of blinding light at the Emissary!
“…but not today! Everyone, RUN!”
_____________________
Belarin moves 5 feet southwest toward the Emissary. Action: He uses his feyweave’s daily power to attempt to blind the Emissary with a burst of light. 10-foot cube starting from Belarin’s position; the Emissary must make a Charisma save, DC 15, or be blinded until the end of Belarin’s next turn. Belarin continues to move for another 25 feet south, zig-zagging a bit to stay at least 10 feet from the Emissary in the process. (Thank you, 5E.)
UPDATE: If Belarin is struck, he'll use Misty Escape to go farther south.

Ken, if he is struck: how far do you want to go? 60 feet is pretty far! Do you want to go as far as the spider pit itself? And I forget, do you have to see where you're teleporting to? Consider the darkness.

I think it's a maximum of 30 feet, but good point about vision. Yes, he has to be able to see, so he'll go as far as his vision will guide him. If the Emissary is too busy chasing him, then it means he's not necessarily attacking.

The wraith-knight doesn’t even shield his eyes at Belarin’s dazzling display of lights. For a moment the white eyes that show from his slitted faceplate seem to melt away, then return again. He doesn’t seem to be impeded. Despite this, Belarin weaves around him, staying beyond even the reach of his greatsword as he hustles to get around the creature. As one the ghouls rush forward like the small horde they are. Two of them throw themselves at Adamant simply because they are caught in a desperate rage and perhaps haven’t yet realized that his wood and mineral body probably won’t satisfy them. The first rams into him fast and hard and actually slashes filthy talons across his head and neck, tearing at the wood. The second one Adamant stops short with his shield, slamming it loudly back. The rest of the group surge around Adamant. Seeing a particularly tall one about to pass him by, Adamant impales it with his sword and just holds it in place even as it hisses in rage and scrapes clawed feet on the ground, trying and failing to keep running. But he cannot stop them all. Two of the ghouls rush past their pinned companion and close in on Tangat and Kal both, lunging with arms that seem slightly longer than they should be. Kal ducks and parries one wild claw swing with Skyfang, but he sees the ghoul lunging at Tangat draws its claws across the dog’s back. Tangat yelps from the pain but resists the paralytic toxins of its touch. Another darts past Adamant’s left side and throws itself at Shorak. The agile half-drow is startled by its speed and desperation and fails to dodge the slash of its claws. He feels the burn of its talons and the immediate stiffening of his limbs, but he grits his teeth and shrugs it off. A much smaller ghoul, a halfling female once, and probably pretty before her skin became stretched horrifically across her skull—leaps up onto the wall just behind Shorak’s attacker. She lets out a scream of elation, as if waiting for the space to pounce. Her shrill cry echoes down the canyon... Finally, the last one goes for Adamant as well, seeming aware of the barrier he presents. It dives at his middle, for a moment wrapping its arms around his waste, and rends madly along his exposed parts. Gliding almost like some floating construct, the wraith-knight drifts backwards and then moves back in front of Belarin again, blocking him. "You will not escape me." He leans forward and down comes the greatsword! Belarin rocks back on his heels in an effort to avoid being cut in half, but the heavy blade does just catch him. A long and bloody line is cut across the warlock's chest, a strike which chills him to the core. With less than a thought, Belarin reacts to the strike and vanishes on the whims of his magic, teleporting away. The wraith, blade raised for another devastating attack, whirls around in a fury, searching in vain for Belarin. Well beyond Adamant's light now, Belarin is once again back in the gloom. For a moment, the wraith-knight cannot see him, but when his invisibility wears away, he's confident his foe can see easily in the darkness.
● Wraith-knight's Charisma saving throw vs. Belarin's spell: 21 ● Ghoul attack vs. Adamant: 21 (hit) / 9 slashing damage to Adamant ● Ghoul’s attack vs. Adamant: 15 (miss) ● Ghouls move... → Adamant’s opportunity attack one that attempts to move past him: 26 (hit) / 5 slashing damage and the ghoul stops moving ● Ghoul attack vs. Tangat: 22 (hit) / 6 slashing damage to Tangat / Tangat’s Constitution saving throw: 8 +3 (Aura of Protection) = 11 (success) (Case in point: Tangat would totally have failed and been paralyzed if not for being within 10 feet of Adamant at the time!) ● Ghoul’s attack vs. Kal: 7 (miss) ● Ghoul’s attack vs. Shorak: 19 (hit) / 10 slashing damage to Shorak / Shorak’s Constitution saving throw: 9 +1 (talisman) = 10 (success) → Uncanny Dodge: Shorak halves the damage to 5 instead ● Ghoul attack vs. Adamant: 24 (critical hit) / 12 slashing damage to Adamant
● Wraith-knight's first attack vs. Belarin: 15 (hit) / 14 slashing damage and 11 necrotic damage to Belarin / Belarin's Strength saving throw: 13 (failure), he is pushed 15 feet north → Belarin uses Misty Escape to teleport 60 feet south (into an area of dim light). He is also invisible until the start of his next turn. (The wraith-knight is denied his second attack now.)
Misty Escape is indeed 60 feet, not 30. And boy, those temporary hit points helped the group a lot this round.
Request: In your next post, please state what is in your character’s hands (weapons, etc.), if any. Remember that most spells (but not all) require a material component or arcane/divine focus.

"Adamant, shine your light at its brightest and everyone run." With that Shorak dodges away from the ghoul that attacked him and with his incredible speed, he runs back down the passage back towards the spider pit, being sure to steer clear of the wraith. When Shorak gets closer to Belarin, the half-Drow says, "We need to lead the wraith back to the spiders."

Streko thinks about it for a moment.
"I have a better idea, I think, than risking destroying so much food for Condign's captor. I suggest, however, everyone dodge to the side if they can. I'm not sure this will work, but if it does, a happier spider will be had and then we will have just one foe to deal with."
Streko then asks for Olladra's help and, thinking She would approve, recalls the sounds made by the Queen Spider Wraith Thing.
And begins to mimic the sound, as if coming from above and behind the ghouls. He adds what he hopes is a tinge of merciless joy to the sound, hoping it will herd the undead creatures she sees as food in a panic over the wraith and into the pit, and her waiting mandibles. The hissing sibilants boom from the shadows and echo across the rocks. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Because she is a trickster by nature, Olladra, Streko thinks, would be happy to comply. His spell precedes a disturbing chittering and whispering which originates from a point between the small pack of ghouls and Kal's wall of fire. Those engaged with Adamant instantly react, turning their heads in sudden paranoia and watchfulness, but it's hard to say whether the reaction is fear or mere puzzlement.
With Streko moving nowhere, though, Adamant is worried that he and Streko with both soon be surrounded.

Adamant struggles with the number of undead, taking some small injuries. "I am not food for you." He complains pushing a ghoul back with his shield. But it's his failure to hold all of them back that frustrates him. "Run!" he calls back. Then Streko makes spider noises appear behind the undead, creating a breath in the battle. "That is a clever idea, Streko, let me see if I can build on it. Kal, Streko, whatever happens next you must run!" Adamant slides around the ghouls, getting between the wall of flame and them. "Foul currs!" Adamant's shout reverberates with power. "Witness the Glory of Dol Arrah's Holy Light and tremble! Flee from Her authority!"
With Streko moving nowhere, though, Adamant is worried that he and Streko with both soon be surrounded. Yes, yes he is...
So move 1 NW. If Addy thinks it won't trigger any additional reaction attacks (not sure how distracted the ghouls are), he'd move 1 NE as well, but if it would he'll work with just the one square move.
In either case, he then does a Turn the Unholy... any undead or fiends w/i 30' must make a WIS save (I think the DC is 14, his spell DC). Any that fail have to move away from Adamant. They don't get reactions. that lasts for 1 minute or until they take damage.
Hopefully Adamant doesn't take too many hits on his move... Hopefully most ghouls fail their saves and flee... hopefully they mostly run towards the spider den... that's a lot of hopes I suppose...

Adamant surges around the ghouls, stepping a few paces north—and none of the ghouls are quick to respond. When he calls upon Dol Arrah, light shines out from her symbol, for a moment brighter and purer than the Delver’s Light on his chest. The snarls and hisses of the ghouls around him turn into a cacophonous cry of desperate but disturbing fear. The ghoulish halfling on the wall screams—and it sounds uncannily like a terrified little girl. Only two of the ghouls defy the paladin’s power—the one he’d stopped with his blade earlier and the one beside Kal that had attacked Shorak. Kal feels a surge of hope as most of the ghouls shy away from Adamant, suddenly ignoring him, Streko, and Tangat. But his joy turns anxious as beside him, Streko grunts from sudden pain. Streko's right arm feels as though it’s just been smacked with a warhammer. Then a somewhat lighter blow, as if by a club, hits him in the side. His armor doesn’t seem to factor into it at all. What curse is this?! There are no visible enemies around him making such attacks! I’ve ruled that Streko’s distraction is good for one step of Adamant’s without provoking an OA, but not more than that.
● Streko takes 7 points of bludgeoning damage, then 3 addition damage. ● Ghouls’ Wisdom saving throws: 8 (failure), 8 (failure), 7 (failure), 15 (success), 4 (failure), 4 (failure), 20 (success) The two that succeeded ignore the Turn the Unholy effect, the rest are turned for 1 minute or until they take damage. A turned creature must spent its turns trying to move as far away from him as they can (and they will move southward!), nor can they willingly move to a space within 30 feet of him. They cannot take reactions. For their actions, they can use only the Dash action or try to escape from an effect that prevents them from moving. If there’s nowhere to move, the creature can use the Dodge action. (this means that when they move, opp attacks can be made against them if they leave a threatened space—will Kal, Streko, or Adamant do so or will they let them run?)
Very good use of Channel Divinity, Dave!
I can't update the map just yet, but the only difference is that Adamant is one square NW now. The two ghouls that are not turned are the ones due west of Kal's icon and the one due east of Adamant's icon (before he moves).
