The mace nearly pulps what passes for the spider's face. It convulses in agony as its gore drips down upon Condign. The tiefling can feel that the mace is a deadly weapon, but he also feels a pulse of energy within it that he has not yet tapped into. He might as well be swinging around a finely made sword while it's still sheathed. Though it is well made, it's not being used to its full potential.
Condign deals 7 points of bludgeoning damage to the spider, and this along with Kal's spell has nearly finished it. He's pretty sure another blow would finish it off.
Brian, I realized we didn't address the attunement matter. Condign would need to attune himself to this mace (and he's already attuned to three other things, which is the maximum). So after this battle, if all goes well for you (heh), you can figure it out then. You will at least learn more about the armor from this fight.

Belarin frowns at the failure of his spell to reveal Streko's attacker. "Shadow take me," he mumbles, "what's the point?" But then he sees Kal cast a spell and hears the sound of battle from the pit! He dashes back to the beginning of the bridge and views the situation with despair.
What can I do? he thinks. I can't talk to beasts or monsters! They're not people I can sway with clever words or charms! The wave of anxiety suddenly parts as he recalls a conversation several years ago with the nymph Raeshara. It hadn't been unusual to see forest animals - even large bears - approach her without fear or malice. He'd initially accepted that as an intrinsic part of her fey nature, but as his knowledge grew, so did his curiosity, and on this particular day, he had chosen to ask her about it. "That's good, Belarin," she had replied, stroking his unkempt hair out of his face. Her voice was a sonnet, even in his memories. "The answer is, as you might expect, not a straightforward one. Yes, I do have talents that are unique to my kind... but the Fey also possess magicks that can persuade creatures as small as a mouse and as large as an owlbear. As our link grows, you'll learn some of those magicks... but you'll need to be patient -- something which you humans find remarkably difficult!"
Her gently mocking laugh brings an end to the memory, and he realizes with a shock that he had never recalled that memory -- until now. Why? How? Was the mention of an owlbear a coincidence or a sign that Dolurrh is warping his feeble mind? Or... is it a sign that Raeshara and the fey haven't abandoned him, even here? He grits his teeth and tries to fight the feeling of uselessness. He may not care about his own fate, but the fates of Kal, Condign, the others -- he does care about those.
"Kal!" he calls out. "Let me try something before you attack it...!" He points his hand toward the huge spider poised directly under Kalarian. "Through realms of darkness do you crawl / Abandon your will, heed my call!"
_______________________________
Belarin is casting dominate beast on the spider underneath Kal. Since no one is attacking it just yet, it should be a straight roll vs. my spell DC. Belarin should realize whether or not the spell takes hold. If it works, I'll issue a mental command.

Belarin feels his magic reach out....and fail to take hold on the great spider. Not for any resistance to his power, but due to its ineligibility for its purpose. He realizes that these ape no mere beasts, but something else. Its mind is greater somehow, or its nature aberrant in some way.
Then he hears a hissing sound emit from the creature, and at the same time the words "Two mages, slay!" suddenly pop into his mind—and everyone else nearby hears it as well, and the words do not seem to be directed to them. Like a telepathy that can't be targeted.
Alas, mechanically, these spiders are not beasts but monstrosities. An important point Belarin could not have otherwise become aware of until now.

"What the---" says Belarin. A quick glance at Kal's face confirms that he, too, heard the strange voice in his mind. "They're already in someone's thrall," he warns the group.

"Adamant, get over here. Condign will need your strength to pull him up!" Kal holds the rope out to the warforged as he hurls a ball of fire at the spider nearest to Condign. "Okay, Kal... I'm coming your way." Adamant moves on the bridge and carefully edges up to Kal. He takes the offered rope and wraps the end around his hand, judging the distance down is such that he'll need as much left hanging for Condign as possible. "Condign, can you move to the rope? I'm afraid I can't come to you... well, except the obvious way." Adamant waits to start hauling his friend up. Sorry, first day back to work... its crazy...
So I'm assuming Adamant can't move past Kal easily. He's going to take it slow... if the bridge starts to show signs of actually breaking, he'll back up. If Condign grabs the rope, Adamant will Aid his climb.

Actually, Adamant can move past Kal. The bridge isn't so narrow that it foils the normal rule that you can move freely through an ally's space (as long as you don't stop within it). So Adamant can move past him and then ready an action to help Condign, provided Condign does take the opportunity on his next turn.Adamant moves to the edge of the bridge; though he feels it sway slightly, something strong is keeping it aloft. He lets the rope drop down the pit, and there isn't much slack from there. Be sure to refresh the page.

Kal feels the anxiety of knowing the spider is directly below him. He never did like spiders very much. Still, the rope has been lowered and Condign's safety is in question. He ignores the creature below him and focuses his energy on the one threatening the tiefling.

A flare of firelight is the only warning, but it’s enough for the many-eyed spider on the wall by Condign to skitter out of the way of Kal’s bolt of flame. Shorak, still throwing glances behind Streko in search of unseen foes, decides real foes have been presented. Seeing that the giant spider underneath Kal seems most intent on him, Shorak takes advantage of its fixation. He doesn’t seem the slightest bit concerned about losing his boomerang over an open pit—given his skill with it, you’re not surprised—so he lets his weapon fly. The tribladed boomerang arcs with a slight whistling sound, slices off one its front legs completely, and slashes across the top of its head before circling back upward and returning to the half-drow’s hand. The spider hisses in agony, and all but Condign hear a telepathic screech as well. Punish them, mother! They live, they bite! Shorak’s attack vs. bridge spider: 16 (hit) / 9 slashing + 4d6 (18) sneak attack = 27 slashing damage to bridge spider
For the record, I really don’t like making rolls for you guys (except, of course, when you're absent like Mr. Bean). I only do it when I have to or if I think it would save a lot of time in the midst of a round or whatever. Like some saving throws.
Round 2 commences!

Streko reaches out and touches Shorak's arm. "May the Trickster bless you with good fortune and quick feet!" After Streko's magic flows into Shorak... The spider in front of Condign springs upon him with a maddening hiss, and though it grapples with his shield for a moment, two of its legs peel the barrier away and it leans in, fangs clashing audibly. The tiefling tries to push it away, but it's stronger than it looks. The spider leverages him into its embrace and then at last the fangs click into his armor and with a quiet pop, puncture it and sink into his right shoulder. Sharp, stabbing pain precedes the enervating chill of death, then the fire of poison in his veins! Streko cries out almost at the same time—drawing dismayed looks from Shorak and Belarin, who stand beside him. Streko instinctively clasps at his own right shoulder in pain, as confused as he is hurt. He cannot understand the source for nothing is attacking him! Streko feels like he's been stabbed in the shoulder with two frozen daggers as the moisture of his blood soaks through his clothes right beneath his untouched armor. Meanwhile, the spider beneath Kal and Adamant shifts its bulk speedily halfway up and around and it instantly lunges at Kal. Adamant swings with speed and tries to bat the monster's face away with his shield. The spider is too quick, and its fangs sink into the meat of Kal's leg. His magic armor stiffens on the fangs, quickly ejecting it, but he feels the agony of poison swirling through his leg. ● Spider's attack vs. Condign: 25 (hit) / 11 piercing damage and 2 necrotic damage to Condign ● Condign's Constitution saving throw: 25 (success, half damage) / 10 poison damage to Condign ● Streko also takes 11 piercing and 2 necrotic damage. ● Bridge spider attacks Kal. → Adamant imposes disadvantage on the attack (Fighting Style: Protection), since he's not able to Aid Condign this round after all (Condign would have had to move to the rope) ● Bridge spider's disadvantaged attack rolls: 20 and 26 (hit; but Adamant may have prevented a critical hit) → Kal's armor halves the damage: / 6 piercing and 1 necrotic damage to Kal instead of 12 and 2 ● Kal's Constitution saving throw: 13 (success, half damage) / 12 poison damage to KalThe bed of bones and skulls beneath Condign shift, though he notices they don't tumble about loosely, almost as though the bones themselves are somewhat stuck together. To his right, he sees a great section of the bones fall out of sight like a curtain being drawn back from below. Yet his sharp eyes are the first to see the great cluster of eyes peering up from the newly revealed void: a spider of immense size, dwarfing the other two, is beginning to emerge. Above, even the rest of you can see it now as a dark arachnid form takes shape beneath the bones on the western side of the fissure. 20 - Condign 14 - Belarin 13 - Adamant 12 - Kal 10 - Shorak
For grid purposes, the mama spider is of Huge size and occupies 9 squares. She'll be more visible soon enough.

Bones continue to shift beneath Condign's feet. He is not able to adequately protect himself. This allows the spider to slip past his defenses. Gritting his teeth, he ignores the pain and the familiar burn of poison and swings at his foe, hoping to finish it off. Seeing the spider fall, the tiefling looks down...and shudders. Huge, evil eyes glare at him from beneath the bone pile. "Oh, that cannot be good," he mutters, and runs for Adamant's rope. ____________________________________________________ Condign attacks the spider next to him.
Condign:1D20+6 → 23(17 + 6)#attack roll number one Condign:1D20+6 → 21(15 + 6)#attack roll number two
Condign:1D6+3 → 7(4 + 3)#damage roll on first attack Condign:1D6+3 → 9(6 + 3)#damage roll attack two
Assuming the spider falls, Condign will move three squares south to Adamant's rope and, if allowed, grab it! I'm hoping, since mama spider is still partially buried under bones, Condign's move does not provoke an opportunity attack.

The first sweep of Condign’s new mace crunches into the black spider, smashing through exoskeleton and softer parts beneath it, while the second takes it from the wall and sends it curling up, devastatingly slain, down into the bones between himself and the cluster of massive eyes peering back at him.
The spider is slain, and Condign is able to move 10 feet and grasp the rope with his shield hand as his one free action.

Belarin yells in frustration as he looks at the wounded Streko. "Dammit! There's nothing here! It's as if---" His eyes goes wide and he dashes to the edge of the pit. He spots the monstrous spider rising from the bed of bones. "By the Sovereign Host!" They need to get Condign out. Now. He points the tip of his dagger at the the spider that's harassing Kal on the bridge. "Stupid spider, no more you'll crawl / Your Mommy calls, it's time to fall!" Red and silver flame erupts from the dagger. __________________________________ Belarin moves to the edge and attacks Spider Jr. with Eldritch Blast. 1d20 + 8 = 28. Critical hit! Belarin's blast hits the spider harassing Kal and for a moment it looks like it'll dislodge it from the bridge. Its legs flail madly and it manages to hold on, weeping gore from its wounds. Tangat barks and sprints out onto the bridge, lunging and snapping at its closest legs, aiming to finish it off. Instead the wolfhound's legs skitter and fumble on the boards and he rams uselessly into the spider's leg, yelping, and nearly falling off the bridge himself. A loud, almost embarrassed whine follows as he straightens and stands tall again. Tangat's attack: 5 (natural 1, yikes)

Condign grabs the rope and Adamant calls down to him, "Twist it around your arm if you can and hold on..." Adamant starts pulling up the rope, wrapping it around himself as long-enough lengths of rope rise.
First the math, cuz I bothered to looks stuff up and I'm inordinately proud of that...
So RAW, a PC can lift his STR * 30 in weight... So Adamant STR (16) * 30 = 480 lbs. Condign's sheet says he weighs 205 and has 79 pounds of stuff he's carrying so that's 284 lbs of weight. That all sounds like it works.
But I couldn't find a place where it says how far you can pull something... but I don't actually have the books, I just was looking at the website where the Basic rules are... Can we say make a STR check to get Condign up to the bridge? Or maybe it's not really possible and I should wait to do an Aid on Condign's next turn?

Kal feels the bite of the spider. 'Not poison. Not again' he thinks. He feels his knees weaken, though, as the giant spider below them begins to rise. He knows Condign still needs time to make it to safety...or at least as safe as any place can be in this realm. Fearing to use his most powerful magic when they don't know what else they'll face, Kal turns and fires another bolt of fire at the nearest spider.

So technically, since Kal is using a ranged attack against an enemy adjacent to him, he'd have been disadvantaged on the roll, but since Darren rolled a 1 anyway, the point is moot.
In a desperate gesture, Kal looses a bolt of fire from Skyfang but it misses wildly and struggles just to keep his balance on the bridge in the process. As he readies another throw of his boomerang, Shorak calls out to him. "Kal, get off the bridge before your throw yourself down it! Adamant will either get Condign or he won't. There's no sense more of us dying today." He throws a quick, grim glance at Streko, then lets fly his boomerang. The weapon slashes through two legs, severing them, then splits through the face of the beast. It falls, still convulsing, down into the Adamant-lit pit. Condign, as he's hoisted in the air under Adamant's strength, sees it fall past him and crumple to the floor of bones. ● Shorak's attack vs. bridge spider: 24 (hit) / 7 slashing damage and 18 sneak attack damage to spider ● Bridge spider is slain.
Round 3:
23 - Streko 21 - giant spiders 20 - Condign 14 - Belarin 13 - Adamant 12 - Kal 10 - Shorak
Although wounded by the unseen, Streko is far from fallen. Displaying the plucky resolve that only halflings seem to possess at the proper time, he marches right in front of Shorak, standing before the open fissure and staring down at the massive spider emerging. "All right, Olladra," he says aloud as he reaches for something in his pocket. "You didn't make this die, but you can make it spin!" He rolls the Vagabond Die in his closed fist, then holds it out as he opens his fingers: A stylized lightning bolt is revealed. And in that instant, a thin tongue of electricity stabs down from the dark heavens above. The beastly arachnid makes a soft chirping sound as it strikes. Streko sighs. "It may be my Lady's plan to anger our enemy first, just to shake things up." As the colossal female spider's body emerges in full—lusterless black and rimmed with innumerable spines—two more of the "smaller" ones climb up from the gap behind her. They await at the bottom of the pit, however, as if conceding the first attack to their parent. Condign is keenly aware that her body is filling up the space he just evacuated. Two of her legs reach up and grasp the lower half of the rope that Adamant is holding. She tugs and the rope goes taut and Condign's body vibrates under the force. Adamant, meanwhile, isn't sure he'll be able to succeed in a tug-of-war against so massive a creature. Then with frightening speed the spider lunges bodily upward, her legs easily traversing the sheer sides of the pit. With ease, she plucks Condign from the rope, grasping him painfully in mouthy appendages that almost resemble clawlike arms. He is bruised under the sheer strength of it, though he suspects she is being "gentle." As he gasps under the pain, Streko does the same! He clutches at his own body in the same way. The link between them is suddenly horribly apparent to all those watching. Caught in the jaws of the terrible spider-thing, Condign is coldly aware that his new armor has somehow afflicted him and Streko. The damage done to him is being done to his halfling friend. But why? Hanging just over Condign's head are the glistening fangs of the mother spider. Poised to bite (and large enough to sunder him in the doing), he realizes she isn't instantly killing him. The mother spider emits a chittering hiss, and all of you hear her voice in your mind. A bargain we will make for the life of the red man. Yes? ● Streko uses the Vagabond Die. The mother spider takes 6 points of lightning damage. ● Mother spider's advantaged attack vs. Condign: 26 and 21 (hit) / 12 bludgeoning damage to Condign and Condign is now grappled (and being carried outright now) ● 12 bludgeoning damage to Streko as well

"Other than Condign back, is there anything we need here? We don't need to cross here, correct?" Adamant calls back to Belarin.
The warforged keeps the rope hanging there for Condign, though the rope carries no weight now. Adamant conjures up the mental image of Dol Arrah in her blindingly holy glory and whispers a prayer for Condign...
Condgin's not on the rope now, right? So pulling now would be senseless.
Also, I sense we're not really in rounds... Is it possible to be ready to cast Sanctuary on Condign if it seems like Mama Spider is going in for a bite? It's a swift action which sounds really quick.
Alternatively I could do Compelled Duel to put disadvantage on any attacks Mama Spider does against people who are not Addy... That's listed as a bonus action which sounds slower to me... otoh, I suspect if she makes an attack on Condign, even disadvantaged, it's going to be pretty hard to miss.

For a moment flames burst into being all around the monstrous spider, but they are quickly extinguished. She hisses and is burned, but just barely. She does not move from her position, perched between both sides of the fissure, Condign still clenched in her mouth. Belarin calls out, "His life is valuable, and his death would exact a painful price from you. What is it you seek?" "Other than Condign back, is there anything we need here? We don't need to cross here, correct?" Adamant calls back to Belarin. "Condign," Kal calls out, "calm down...if you can." Fighting down his revulsion, Kal steadies his legs and looks into the many eyes of the spider in front of him. "What is your bargain?" he asks. Even as he does so, images form in his mind, and he is somehow aware that they don't originate from his mind... __________________ Let's try out Kal's new spell! He will cast Detect Thoughts on the mama spider. The monstrous spider emits a rasping sound; it's quiet to most of you, but quite a bit louder to Condign, who can't quite make out what manner of organs she possesses quite unlike a spider that allows such sounds. But at the same time, telepathic words follow the sounds. Living men tasteless, no juice. Little use. Bring to bear the dead that move, free the red man I will. Near, go! No bargain at all. Wait and I bite. With that, she gestured with two of her legs, pointing northward. Enacting his spell, Kal fixes on the mother spider, gleaning her surface thoughts in the span of only a few seconds. He finds her thoughts match her telepathic words, but they are not obscured by her limited grasp of the Common tongue. Therefore his spell provides a handier translation for what she means: Living beings provide little sustenance for my children. We require the undead for our meals; there are few remaining in our nets. There are some nearby, lairing in warrens to the north. Shepherd them to me, and I will release to you the red-skinned man unharmed. Take too long, and we will tear him apart. Now that Kal "hears" this, he realizes it makes some sense. She is a denizen of the Realm of the Dead. If she and her kind fed on living creatures, who are very few and far between in Dolurrh, she would likely starve. ● Mama spider's Dexterity saving throw: 14 (success, half damage) ● Kal has cast Detect Thoughts. Now that he's gleaned her immediate surface thoughts, he must decide whether to leave it that, focus on another target, or delve deeper into her mind, which forces her to make a Wisdom saving throw. If she succeeds, he can dig deeper, but whether she saves or not, she will also become wise to his doing this.
Dave, to answer your question: Yeah, we're kind of out of combat mode now, which is where reactions (and readying actions) and such are made.

Condign has gleaned some of what the monstrous spider is trying to communicate: it is willing to trade his life for some form of food that can be found nearby; either feed the thing or he dies. Given the spider's considerable size and his considerable injuries, the tiefling is left with no choice.
Slowly lowering his mace, Condign shouts to the others. "Whatever it wants, go get it!" Then, with a touch of asperity, he adds, "I will wait here for you!"

Kal nods at the spider and then at his friends. "The creature speaks true. It simply wants food, and I have no real love for the undead. It seems we have little choice but to do what it asks."
Without really knowing what he is doing, Kal stretches his thoughts to the north, in the direction indicated by the spider, to see if he can hear the thoughts of anyone else in the area.

The divination of Kal's spell only extends thirty feet beyond himself, so it does not allow him to reach beyond the northern edge of the fissure itself.
While she waits for you to converse among yourselves or prepare to move on, the monstrous spider reaches down with a pair of her legs and appears to be drawing up a web—but you see no strands. Instead, she touches the mass of bones from which she had crawled and begins to draw it up like a curtain. The bones rattle as they move, but you see they are not merely a collection of loose bones; they seem to adhere to one another, though not stiffly, forming a macabre fabric. She draws this meshof bones up and starts to weave it into a new layer at the same level of the bridge. In less than half a minute, she has fashioned a bony layer that picks up from where the bridge leaves off.
...All while Condign remains grasped in her mandibles. The two massive fangs hanging over head head gleam, though he's not seen her fill them with any obvious venom. Yet.

Belarin looks at Kal strangely. "You speak Spider?" he asks. "I'm glad someone understood that. Well then, let's be off. It's not as though we didn't expect to fight a few more undead regardless." His tone is depressingly morose.
"We'll return shortly, Condign," he calls to his friend. He directs a question at the large spider. "We bring you the dead ones to eat, and then we all leave each other alone, yes?"

Yes, the monstrous spider issues.
Then, leaving the mesh of bones suspended above, she withdraws, scuttling silently back down the fissure with her bargaining chip still grasped. She disappears through another layer of the bone web, leaving only a gaping hole. The few smaller ones scuttle in after her, and soon the only arachnids you see are the two dead ones, lying curled and shriveled to the side of the fissure, ignored.
Condign is now gone, too.

Before the spider leaves...
Kal quickly adds, "And must the dead ones be...alive? Must they still be animated?"
