When Syrdan glances to Adamant, the warforged nods in agreement, "We have some time before we should meet up with the rest. Let's see if we can deliver this message before the day winds down."

For the sake of out-of-character expedience, Adamant and Syrdan will be on their own for a good long while if they go this one alone. Might be best to wait till everyone meets up again.

If they do go it alone, the party's going to be split up for a looong time.

Can Kal make an Arcana check to determine the properties of the sword?

Nope, not quite so simply. Sorry, I forgot to say so (again).

Identifying Magic Items
Most of the time, you can determine the properties and powers of a magic item during a short rest. In the course of handling the item for a few minutes, you discover what the item is and what it does. You can identify one magic item per short rest.

Some magic items might be a bit harder to identify, such as cursed or nonstandard items, or powerful magical artifacts. Your DM might ask for an Arcana check to determine their properties, or you might even need to go on a special quest to find a ritual to identify or to unlock the powers of a unique item.

So far Condign's attempt to discern the sword's properties, if it has any, was not successful. Then again, he tried in a few minutes' time in the middle of a very crowded and tense street. Perhaps more time with a more peaceful environment will help. Then again, it may not. For run-of-the-mill magic items (potion of healing, level 1 wand, etc.), the 5 minutes "rest" will be enough. For more unique things, not so. So just be patient and keep trying.

I will say that Kal can sense that the sword is enchanted, though.
